About the Center of Opportunity

The new H.S. Lopez Family Foundation Center of Opportunity was formerly a 150,000 square foot hotel and conference center. Humberto and Czarina Lopez of HSL Properties purchased it last summer with the vision of donating it to serve the homeless.

“When this property became available, I immediately jumped on it before someone reopened it as a hotel,” says Mr. Lopez. “I’ve supported Gospel Rescue Mission for over 30 years and I was very fortunate that, at the time, they were in the process of looking to expand. I invited them over and they became a perfect fit.”

This hotel is an incredible gift from the H.S. Lopez Family Foundation. It comes equipped with a full-service kitchen capable of serving up to 3,000 meals a day and an 8,900-square foot banquet hall that we will convert into our new Men’s Shelter. 51 individual suites will house our men in recovery. And it has unique extras like a 150 seat theater, perfect for chapel services and classes.

Everything under one roof

God has provided for the 200 beds we had prayed for and much more! One of the biggest hurdles the homeless face is not a lack of programs and services – but the ability to get to them.

“Homeless, for the most part, walk” says Roy Tullgren, our Executive Director. “They have to go across town to apply for various services like food assistance and child care, then travel downtown to go to traffic court or drug court. They are all over town to get all of their needs met.

“This Center of Opportunity will provide one location where people can access all the resources they need to become self-sufficient. Housing programs, job skills training, employment services; there will be everything they need to move on in life with a second chance.”

More than a shelter

In addition to the Christ-centered shelter and recovery services provided by Gospel Rescue Mission, the Center of Opportunity will provide individuals in need with many services:

  • Healthcare
  • Dental Services
  • Workforce Development
  • Employment Services
  • Behavioral Health
  • Veterans Services
  • Government Assistance
  • Affordable housing
  • Re-Entry Services for former inmates
